First, connect a compatible diagnostic platform (e.g., Honda HDS, Autel MaxiCOM, or Launch X431) to the vehicle’s OBD‑II connector. Power the scan tool and select “Immobilizer/Key Programming” from the menu. The software will prompt you to enter the VIN; most tools can read it automatically from the ECU, but you should verify it against the chassis plate. After confirming the VIN, the system will request the 8‑digit security code. This code is stored in the immobilizer ECU and can be retrieved by the scan tool after proper authentication, which typically requires the original key or a previously programmed key to be present.
With the correct VIN and security code entered, choose “Erase Existing Keys” to clear all previously programmed transponder IDs. This step is crucial for models equipped with a “one‑key‑only” policy, such as the Honda Accord (2008‑2015) and Civic (2012‑2020). Once the erase command completes, insert the new Honda transponder key (type 01 or 02, depending on the model) into the ignition and turn it to the “ON” position. The scan tool will then write the new key’s ID to the immobilizer module. After programming, the system will request a verification cycle: start the engine, let it run for at least 30 seconds, then turn it off and repeat. Successful completion is indicated by a green checkmark on the diagnostic screen.
If the engine fails to start, re‑run the verification step while monitoring the immobilizer status codes. Common issues include a mismatched key ID, a faulty transponder chip, or an ECU that has entered a lockout state after too many failed attempts. In such cases, re‑erase the keys and repeat the programming sequence, ensuring the key is fully seated and the ignition is in the correct position. For vehicles equipped with the Honda “Keyless Entry” system, an additional step is required: after programming the transponder, you must also pair the remote fob using the “Remote Programming” function, which stores the fob’s ID alongside the immobilizer data.
