Preparing the Door and Lock Components

Begin by confirming that the door frame meets the lock’s specifications: a minimum 2‑inch backset, a 2‑½‑inch bore, and a 1‑inch strike plate hole. Remove the existing deadbolt, retaining the interior and exterior plates for reference. Clean the strike plate area and inspect the door’s wood for cracks that could affect the lock’s torque. Using the supplied template, mark the new latch bolt hole and drill a 1‑inch hole with a 13 mm spade bit, then countersink the latch faceplate. Install the latch bolt, ensuring the tail of the bolt sits flush with the edge of the door. Attach the strike plate with three 3‑mm screws, aligning the latch opening with the bolt’s path.

Electrical Hook‑Up and Firmware Initialization

Smart locks typically require a 3‑V power source derived from four AA batteries or a built‑in rechargeable pack. Insert the batteries, respecting polarity, and verify the lock’s LED indicator shows a steady green, confirming power. Connect the lock’s communication module to the home hub: for Z‑Wave, place the lock within 3 meters of the hub and press the program button on the lock’s interior side for 5 seconds; the hub should detect the device and display a “new device” prompt. For Bluetooth, open the lock’s mobile app, select “Add Device,” and follow the on‑screen pairing code. Once paired, download the latest firmware via the app; the lock will reboot automatically. Verify the firmware version matches the release notes before proceeding.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

If the lock fails to communicate, first check battery voltage with a multimeter; a reading below 2.9 V indicates a weak pack. Replace the batteries and repeat the pairing process. Persistent failure may be caused by interference: relocate the hub away from dense metal objects or Wi‑Fi routers operating on the same 2.4 GHz band. For latch misalignment, re‑measure the strike plate gap; the latch should clear the strike by 0.5 mm when fully extended. Adjust the strike plate by loosening the screws, shifting the plate up or down, and retightening. Finally, if the lock’s motor stalls during lock/unlock cycles, inspect the deadbolt’s internal spring for damage and replace the spring kit supplied in the service pack.
