Kwikset SmartKey Rekey Procedure

Kwikset SmartKey Rekey Procedure

What you'll learn:

Preparation and Cylinder Removal

Begin by confirming that the lock is unlocked and the door is securely closed to prevent accidental exposure of the latch bolt. Remove the exterior escutcheon plate using a Phillips‑head screwdriver; most SmartKey models have two screws hidden beneath the plate. Once the plate is off, locate the retaining clip that holds the cylinder in place. Using a pair of needle‑nose pliers, gently squeeze the clip outward and slide the cylinder out of the housing. Take note of the orientation of the cylinder—most SmartKey cylinders are keyed “in” on the side opposite the keyway, and maintaining this orientation simplifies reassembly.

Rekeying with the SmartKey Tool

Insert the SmartKey rekey tool into the keyway and turn it clockwise until it seats fully. The tool’s tip will engage the internal cam, allowing you to press the new key into the cylinder. With the new key fully inserted, rotate the tool counter‑clockwise a half turn and then pull the key out. The cylinder now retains the new key’s bitting pattern. Repeat this insertion and removal process with a second copy of the new key to ensure consistency; both keys should operate the lock without resistance. After confirming smooth operation, reinsert the cylinder into the lock housing, making sure the retaining clip snaps back into place. Reattach the escutcheon plate, tighten the screws, and perform a final functional test by locking and unlocking the door several times.

Verification and Documentation

To verify the rekey was successful, use a key gauge to measure the depth of each cut on the new key and compare it to the original key’s specifications. Any deviation may indicate an incomplete rekey or a worn pin. Once verified, label the new key set with the lock’s location and the date of rekeying. Store this information in a secure key management log to aid future maintenance. Proper documentation reduces the risk of unauthorized duplication and streamlines any subsequent rekeying tasks.
