Single Pin Picking Fundamentals

Single Pin Picking Fundamentals

What You’ll Learn

Single pin picking (SPP) is the cornerstone of lock manipulation and demands precision, patience, and an understanding of lock mechanics. Begin by securing a practice lock—preferably a 5-pin tumbler—on a vice or workbench. Apply light tension to the plug using a torque wrench, rotating it in the direction that would normally turn the key (usually clockwise). The goal is to create friction between the plug and housing, forcing one or more pin stacks to bind. Your tension must be consistent but minimal; too much will jam the plug, while too little will fail to hold pins at the shear line.

With tension set, insert a pick—typically a half-diamond or pointed tool—into the keyway. Locate the first binding pin by gently lifting each pin stack. The pin that resists upward motion due to tension is the binding pin. Apply upward pressure until you feel or hear a subtle “click” or give, indicating the driver pin has cleared the shear line. Maintain this pressure briefly while the key pin drops back into place. Repeat this process for subsequent binding pins, working from top to bottom (or bottom to top, depending on lock design). Each pin must be set sequentially, ensuring the plug remains rotated under tension. Success hinges on your ability to detect micro-movements and auditory cues, which signal a pin’s correct position.

Common pitfalls include over-picking (excessive upward force) or under-tensioning. Avoid rushing; let the lock dictate the pace. If the plug rotates slightly during pin setting, reset tension and reassess binding order. Practice on low-security locks before advancing to high-security models. Remember, SPP is as much about listening as it is about touch—subtle clicks and vibrations guide your hands.
