Begin by selecting a tension wrench that matches the keyway’s width—typically a 0.020‑0.025 in. wrench for standard residential cylinders. Insert the wrench into the keyway so the longer arm rests against the driver pin’s top, while the shorter arm contacts the plug’s interior. Before you apply torque, ensure the wrench sits flush; any wobble will translate into uneven pressure and cause false sets. Rotate the wrench clockwise (or counter‑clockwise for locks that open opposite) to a “light‑tension” position: the plug should turn no more than 10–15 degrees when you release the wrench.
With the tension wrench in place, insert your pick and begin the standard single‑pin picking motion. The key is to maintain a steady, low‑to‑moderate torque throughout the pick sequence. Too much torque will bind all pins, making it impossible to feel individual pin movement; too little torque will allow pins to spring back after being set. As you lift each pin, listen for a subtle “click” and feel a slight increase in resistance as the pin reaches the shear line. Once a pin sets, the plug will rotate a fraction of a degree—this is the tactile cue that the pin is now aligned. Keep the torque constant and move to the next pin without releasing the wrench.
If the plug jumps suddenly or the tension wrench feels “loose,” you have likely over‑torqued the lock. Release the wrench, reset the tension to a lighter setting, and re‑attempt the pin. Conversely, if the pick slides freely with no feedback, increase torque just enough to create a slight binding on the driver pins. Mastering this feedback loop takes deliberate practice: start with a single‑pin lock, set one pin, and then deliberately unset it by reducing torque to confirm the plug’s movement. Repeat until you can set each pin without visual confirmation, relying solely on the feel of the tension wrench.
